Istanbul è la terza città più grande al mondo per numero di abitanti: 13 milioni, sottostimati. In estate l’affollamento e il caldo sono tali da spingere molti abitanti a spostarsi nelle cosiddette isole dei principi, lontane 20km dalla città, nel mar di Marmara. In epoca bizantina principi ribelli, sovrani deposti e chiunque di alto profilo rappresentasse una minaccia per le autorità veniva confinato nei monasteri e conventi delle isole, da qui il nome “isole dei principi”. Oggi da luogo di confino le isole si sono trasformate in oasi di liberazione dalla vita metropolitana, non è perfino permesso il transito delle automobili a sancire la natura antitetica alla città delle isole.
Con il finire delle ferie però le agiate famiglie che si possono permettere di passare qui i mesi caldi sono costrette a prendere il traghetto e tornare nella lotta per la sopravvivenza quotidiana, che a Istanbul è più accanita che mai. Ma forse questa malinconia nel viaggio viene attutita dalla vista del lembo dorato della città puntellato di minareti che galleggia nel tramonto.

Istanbul is the third largest city in the world for number of inhabitants: 13 millions, underestimated. During the summer crowding and hot weather push many people to move to the prince’s islands, 20km far from the city, in the marmara sea. During the byzantine age the rebel princes, dethroned kings and any other important figure who could represent a threat for the authorities were prisoned in the monasteries and cloister in the islands, from here the name “princes’ islands”. Nowadays from an exile place the islands turned into an oasis of freedom from the busy city life, it is not even allowed to drive car for enduring the difference from the city.
Anyway with the end of vacations the rich families who can spend here the summertime are forced to take a ferry-boat and come back to the daily fight for survival, which in Istanbul is hotter then ever. Maybe this melancholy is softened by the view of the golden patch of the city, shored up with minarets, floating in the sunset.
